The challenge with carbon fiber is its cost. Aluminum is the leading metal alternative, and is much less expensive than carbon fiber — but aluminum is 20-30% heavier. So carbon fiber is used only in settings where lightweighting is essential, and high cost can be justified.

Magnesium is similar in mass to carbon fiber – within five-to-ten percent of equivalent carbon fiber when it is layered and finished – but it costs much less.
